I asked myself this question when I was looking for four team members for the 124 Swiss Passes Challenge.
I knew more or less which roles were needed: a driver, someone for organization and logistics, someone for communication and an "Passport expertsin".
Of course, there are minimum requirements for hard skills - for example, the driver needs a driver's license. But that wasn't my primary concern. The more important question was: Who do I want to be with for 26 days, 24/7?
I was looking for people who were as passionate about this project as I was, people who could think beyond their role, who knew how to deal with uncertainty, constant change and setbacks - because one thing was certain about this challenge: there would be many challenges.
I hired four team members - no one I knew before. None of them had ever done anything similar before. But they all brought unique skills to the team.
And the result? Overwhelming.
Every team member grew into and beyond their role and did far more than was ever asked of them. We laughed so much - so much that I almost fell off my bike - and we got through the tough times together. Respect, trust and optimism were the values we lived by.
So, my thoughts on how to put together a great team?
→ Choose people with whom you can see the fire in their eyes and who really want to be there.
→ Choose people who have already shown resilience and courage - and not just at work.
Because in the end, it's the skills that get the job done - but it is the attitude that makes the impossible possible.
