Imagine you are pursuing your goal and realize halfway there that you have to turn around and take a different route.
This is exactly what happened to me during the 124 Swiss Passes Challenge on day 22, when I rode up the Champex-Lac Pass. In the middle of the ascent: a roadworks site, no way through. What to do?
One option would have been to desperately look for an alternative - perhaps through the forest next to the road or somewhere else - just to avoid going back the same way. Because turning back feels like a defeat.
(It's like when you miss the highway exit and refuse to go back. Instead, you look for any side roads that might eventually take you to your destination. Slower, more complicated, but the main thing is that you don't turn around).
But sometimes the smartest decision is to stop, realize you can't go any further, turn around and take the most direct route to your destination. And do it quickly. Don't think about it for long. Just act - no matter how much it hurts.
That's exactly what we did. We turned around, drove to the other side of the mountain and went up again. It wasn't fun, but adaptability isn't an amusement park skill - it's about making the decisions that will get you, your team or your company to the finish line.
